I didn’t realize, when I arrived at Black Forest Academy in 1991, how deeply embedded the cause of missionary kids would become in my life. As an MK myself, I’ve spent the years since then trying to understand them better and coming to identify obscure parts of myself in the process. MKs are so incredibly blessed–but the missionary lifestyle yields challenges too, and the young people I’ve worked with have been powerfully impacted by all they’ve lived. In an attempt to shed a little bit of light on their complexity, I created this video, using their own words to better define them.

It is so hard to know whether boarding school is the right choice for a child. Based on my observations during 18 years at Black Forest Academy, I’ve written this article to help you, the missionary parent, to decide if this is the right option for your family. Titled “A Parent’s Guide to Boarding School Preparedness,” it asks the important questions that must come before decisions are made, then walks you through the process of preparing your child and your family for the transition into long-distance relationship. Although the article refers specifically to BFA, the truths are applicable to any boarding school to which you’re considering sending your child.
